Southside Jail Release Destinations
Southside Regional Jail is the local adult custody facility for Greensville County and the City of Emporia. A person may leave after bond, recognizance, time served, a sentence ending, or another court disposition. That path may lead back to the community. Yet the same physical departure can be a transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, the United States Marshals Service, or immigration custody. The word “released” must therefore be tied to the authority that receives the person next. The jail release sheet, when maintained and disclosed, is the best local record for the date, time, release authority, and destination or transfer agency.
A court order explains the legal basis for release, but it does not prove when jail processing ended. Likewise, removal from a roster would only show that the person is no longer displayed there. Southside does not offer an official public roster in the reviewed site navigation. A Virginia Jail VINE alert can supply positive notice of a release or transfer event, but it is not a permanent archive. For a full search path across local, state, court, and federal systems, use the Greensville County released inmate search and keep each custody type separate.
Confirm Southside Regional Jail Release
No public inmate locator, current roster, recent-release tab, booking search, or released-person archive was found on Southside Regional Jail’s official website as of the research review. A third-party name disappearing is not proof. Use a person-specific sequence that asks the jail about current confinement, seeks the existing release record, and checks the legal order. This approach also reduces the risk of confusing a transfer with freedom from custody.
- Call the main line at 434-634-2254. Ask Intake/Booking at extension 0407 or the Shift Commander at extension 104 whether the named adult is presently confined.
- If the person is not confined, ask whether staff can state release versus transfer. Do not ask staff to infer facts from an online absence.
- Email the Records Manager at records@southsideregionaljail.org. Give the full name, approximate dates, booking number, and arresting agency when known.
- Request the existing booking and release record, including release date and time, release type or authority, and destination or transfer agency if those fields are maintained.
- Check the Greensville court record for the bond, disposition, sentencing, or commitment order, then reconcile that order with the jail’s physical-release record.
Virginia Jail VINE can add event notice for a matched local-jail record. Register while the record is active and save the release or transfer alert, because updates stop after release. If Southside transfers the person to VADOC, the local registration does not carry into the state-prison system. Eligible users must register separately with NAAVI. A release alert supports an event, while a direct jail record supplies the more durable confirmation.
Note: A court order authorizes a custody change, while the Southside record documents whether and when that physical change took place.
Southside Jail Release Records
The Southside Regional Jail Authority, not the Greensville County Sheriff’s website, is the first custodian to approach for admission, confinement, transfer, and release records. Direct a narrow request to Records Manager Sgt. Takeita Eley. Ask for existing records rather than asking the office to create an account of what happened. Southside publishes no field dictionary, so the items below are request targets, not a promise that each field exists or must be released.
| Requested item | What it may establish |
|---|---|
| Booking number and admission date | Connects the request to the correct custody episode. |
| Release date and time | Records the end of Southside’s physical custody if maintained. |
| Release type or authority | May distinguish bond, time served, court action, or another basis. |
| Destination or transfer agency | May show whether another jail, VADOC, USMS, or ICE took custody. |
| Hold or detainer notation | May explain why release to the community did not occur, subject to lawful limits. |
Ask for the nonexempt, reasonably segregable remainder if part of the record is withheld, along with the statutory basis. Virginia law permits limits on imprisonment, investigation, supervision, sealed, expunged, juvenile, medical, security, and personal information. A requester should not promise themselves a complete jail packet. The Sheriff may hold an arrest report or an agency-created image, while Southside holds jail custody data. These offices have related roles but do not keep the same file.
The official Southside FOIA page shows the jail’s request route.
The captured page supports direct records access when no public roster or release archive answers the question.
Southside Release Record Contacts
Use the office that created the record. The Records Manager handles the person-specific jail-record path, while Intake/Booking or the Shift Commander is the practical route for a current custody question. The main number reaches all three. No public hours for these specific lines were established in the research, so call for current availability instead of assuming office hours.
Current Custody Lines
Intake/Booking: extension 0407
Shift Commander: extension 104
Main: 434-634-2254
The official staff directory is especially important because the jail has no public search tool.
The directory identifies the distinct staff routes for a current confinement check and a formal release-record request.
Note: Ask the Sheriff for arrest material and Southside for jail confinement and release material, since each office is a separate custodian.
Southside Work Release Custody
Southside’s inmate-policies page describes court-approved work release and home electronic monitoring, often shortened to HEM. Neither program is a completed discharge. Work release permits approved movement for work while the sentence and jail authority continue. HEM permits approved home monitoring under set terms. Calling either status “released from Southside Regional Jail” without qualification would blur the key custody question.
The current policy lists work-release eligibility that includes a sentence under twelve months, a nonviolent offense, no outstanding detainers, transportation, and a drug or alcohol check. It states a current work-release charge of $23 per day. HEM is listed at $10 per day, prepaid weekly, plus a one-time $25 installation charge, and requires telephone or basic service. An older duplicate page states a different work-release amount, so the current published amount should still be confirmed by phone before relying on it.
Program movement also must not be generalized into ordinary release logistics. The rule that work-release participants provide transportation is tied to that program. It does not establish a ride policy for all people leaving jail custody. When verifying a person, ask whether the status is work release, electronic monitoring, community release, or transfer. Those terms lead to different records and different next steps.
Southside Jail Release History
Southside Regional Jail opened on December 20, 1998, and replaced the former Greensville County Jail. The regional authority serves both Greensville County and the City of Emporia. That history explains why an older court file may name the county jail while a present records request belongs with Southside. It also explains why a search limited to the Sheriff’s site can miss the current jail custodian.
The official site reports a population of 130 and a historical maximum of 240. Those are undated website statements, not a current-day census or a firm release statistic. They should not be used to estimate how many people leave in a given period. Southside’s public navigation is rich in policy and contact detail but offers no official roster, recent-release list, or booking search. The records directory and FOIA route are therefore the primary digital channels for a release inquiry.
These figures provide institutional context only. A named person’s status still requires direct confirmation tied to a dated custody episode.
Southside Releases and Federal Holds
Southside Regional Jail has held people under United States Marshals Service contracts. An official City of Emporia memorandum in 2025 described reduced USMS contract-bed revenue. A person leaving Southside under federal authority may be going to court, another contract jail, transport, or a Bureau of Prisons institution. None of those moves establishes community release. After federal sentencing, the BOP locator can help identify custody or a later released result, while the federal docket explains the court action.
An ICE detainer creates another possible handoff. A detainer asks an agency to maintain custody for up to 48 hours beyond the ordinary release point so federal immigration authorities can assume custody. If the Southside record shows such a transfer, check the ICE Online Detainee Locator, which covers current custody or release within its limited window. A no-result can have several causes and is not proof of freedom from custody. No separate ICE facility or federal prison was verified in Greensville County.
The sound method uses two records: Southside’s transfer or release record, then confirmation from the receiving federal system. That sequence preserves the difference between leaving one building and leaving all custody. It is also why staff should be asked for a destination or transfer agency if the field exists and can lawfully be disclosed.
Note: A local jail exit under USMS or ICE authority ends Southside custody but may begin another agency’s custody at once.
Southside Jail Release Logistics
No official Southside page gives ordinary release hours, a weekend or holiday process, an exit door, a family waiting point, property-return steps, taxi or rideshare rules, a transit stop, or general transportation home. Those gaps matter. VADOC publishes a detailed state-prison release process, but it cannot be copied onto a regional jail. For current logistics at Southside Regional Jail, call the Shift Commander through the main line and ask only about the specific release at issue.
Before arranging pickup, confirm that processing is complete and that the destination is the community. A court’s authorization can precede administrative work. Another warrant, detainer, or custody order may alter the outcome. Ask where a permitted pickup should wait and whether property procedures apply, but do not treat the Transportation Director title in the directory as proof that the jail supplies rides to released people. The research supports no such general service.
Keep the proof that answers each part of the event. The court order shows legal authority. The jail record shows the physical departure or transfer. A VINE alert adds dated event notice if registration was active. When those sources differ, contact Southside and describe the conflict instead of choosing the source that appears most convenient.
